Minnesota Remains Per Capita Leader in Surgical, Prosthetic and Dentistry Patent Grants

During the first half of 2015, U.S. Entities granted 67% of all Medical Device Patents worldwide, followed by Japan (8%), Germany (4%), China (3%) and Ireland (2%). 8,732 medical device patents were granted by the USPTO, which is the second most granted for the first half of the year in 5 years.

During this time period, U.S. entities claimed 68% of surgical patents. Of the 4,558 surgical patents granted to U.S. entities, Minnesota claimed 557.

U.S. entities claimed 75% of the 810 prosthetics patent grants, of which 66 were granted in Minnesota. Overall, Minneapolis shows signs of growth in the granting of prosthetics patents.

54% of dentistry related patents were claimed by U.S. entities. Minnesota leads in second place to California by 58% in per capita dental patent grants.

Minneapolis and Saint Paul retain surgical patent grant dominance, with Minnetonka growing. Minnesota’s 557 surgical patents were concentrated in Minneapolis (173), St. Paul (157), Maple Grove (106) and Minnetonka (31). Minnetonka doubled its share of the state’s surgical patents granted between the first half of 2011-2014 and the first half of 2015.
