Medical Device Patents Down Globally, Minnesota Still Strong

Q3 2015 saw medical device patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) down for entities filing from across the U.S. and world. Patents granted for all U.S. entities reached 2,695, down 21% from Q3 2014. Year-to-date, patents granted to U.S. entities were down 12% from Q1-Q3 2014 levels. International entities were granted 1,512 patents, down 36% from Q3 2014.

Despite lower overall numbers, U.S. companies maintained their position as top earners of surgical patents with 1,870 of the total 2,850 patents granted. Minnesota topped the list of states with the most surgical patents granted per capita with an average of 4 patents granted per 100,000 people.
